Woman 9

Woman in Space

Sally Ride never thought of becoming an astronaut when she was young. However her brilliance and hard work have made her possible to be the first American woman astronaut. The book 'Sally Ride' explaind about how demanding an astronaut job is but it doesn't mean that a woman can't do it. Even taking in and off the space suit is a real challange. Go to NASA to learn more about the astronaut space suit.

Woman 8

Courage

Bethany Hamilton has been a pro surfer since she was young. But when she was 13 years old, a tiger shark attacked her when she was surfing and ripped off her left arm. Bethany had a fear of going back to sea again and surf but she could fight the fear with courage. Her story in 'Female Sport Stars' inspired Da Hye to fight her own fear of height. She finally decided to give a euro bungy a try. She still screamed to death when her body was tossed up high. The shock almost made her cry but......she has had the courage. Thanks to Bethany.

Woman 7

How Bad was It?

The tiger shark that attacked Bethany was about 4 meters long. Bethany herself was just 1.6 meters tall. Da Hye drew a graph to figure out how terrible it was for Bethany to be attacked by a fierce shark that big. Yet, she was not afraid to go back to the sea. What a wonder woman.

Woman 6

I Believe I can Fly

"You can't fly because of your gender"." You can't fly because of your skin color". But Bessie Coleman didn't want to listen to that. Her determination opened doors for many women in color, not just to fly but also to do things they believed in. (pic: testing the flying pattern of different types of glider, inspired by book 'Bessie Coleman')

Woman 5

Flags of Victory

When Cathy Freeman won the gold medal in the 2000 Olympics, she carried both Australian and Aboriginal community flag around the track. She wanted to show the world that she was proud of being Australian and Aborigine. (Pic: learning the meaning of the flags by drawing both flags using Print Shop Pro 12 )

Woman 4

The Aborigine Pride

Cathrine Freeman was born as the Aborigine in Australia. The aborigine are the first people who lived in Australia before the europeans settled there. Despite hardships in her life (having an abusive father, a single mother working low paid jobs to survive and a descriminative treatment for being an aborigine), Cathy could win a gold medal in 400-meter run in The Olympics (Sydney, Australia, 2000). She didn't just win the race, she also stood up and spoke out to correct the wrong things against her people. (pic: ispired by the book, Da Hye wanted to learn about the aboriginal art by decorating boomerang miniature)

Woman 3

Taking the Risk

On May 21, 1937 Amelia Earhart started her flight around the world. Da Hye drew Amelia's flight route from Oakland California to Miami Florida, South America, Africa, India, Asia, Australia and Lae island New Guinea in a bold line. It was the route she had successfuly passed. Amelia planned to fly back to California by stopping by in Hawaii but something went wrong with the plane and she was lost or probably died in an accident. Although she couldn't make it, her death inspired many people to continuosly improve the airplane technology for the sake of safety.

Woman 2

Amelia Says......

After reading about Amelia Earhart biography and visited the site, Da Hye wrote a report about Amelia's quotes and historic photos. Her favourite Amelia's quote is: "The most effective way to do it is to do it." Da Hye likes the qoute because she thinks it's just true.

Woman 1

Keep on Dreaming and Working

Before and after Amelia Earhart became the first woman pilot to cross the atlantic ocean, she worked at many jobs. She was once a nurse, social worker, clothing designer, magazine editor, airline executive, writer and professor. Although she worked at many different professions, she never forgot her passion to fly.

Art and Craft 11

Origami Class

It's a new hobby...............everyday, everytime online origami class. It doesn't matter that all tutorials are in Japanese. It's still a lot of fun. (pic: some of the works)

Art and Craft 10

Real Celadon

Da Hye always wanted to make the real celadon colored pottery (like the ones commonly used in Korea) that she can use in daily life. To do that we need to have her clay pots burnt and glazed, which is impossible to do it home. We are so lucky to find a place that agrees to help us with the finalization of the pottery. It seems that soon we don't need to buy anymore dishes at home.

Art and Craft 9

Photo Frame

It doesn't look so fancy but it's an original work inspired by Neil Buchanan, the Art Attack guy. At least a girl is so happy making it.

Economics 1

Banknote

It's a paper money but the right term for it is banknote. After learning about the money instrinsic and nominal value, the next step is learning about "What are printed on the banknote?" country name, central bank, nominal value, currency, central bank governor sign and the picture of the country's famous figure.

History 6

Pepper Trade History

The book "Pepper: The King of Spice" says: There's more to a pepper than just a tiny, round and wrinkled seed. It played a dramatic role in the development of Western civilization. Pepper is plentiful today all over the world but in ancient and medival times (especially in europe), it was rare. Pepper had to be brought from India where it was cultivated to Europe passing the ocean, deserts, rivers and mountains (see the map: the colorful route was made by Da Hye using PSP8)

Field Trip 4

Prime Chocolate L'atelier

Mr. Francis Mestre, a French chocolate expert, gave an hour workshop on how to recognize and appreciate real chocolate. He also explained the difference between cocoa grown in Indonesia, Venezuela and Madagascar. Da Hye favourite was 38% chocolate, 75% chocolate was too bitter for her. Major lesson learnt: Indonesia is one of the best cocoa producer in the world but it's a pity that most people can only enjoy artificial 0% chocolate called compound which tastes bad and is unhealthy.

Plant 11

Chlorophyll

All plants can make their own food. This is because plants have chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is green and gives leaves their green colour. Chlorophyll absorbs the sunlight energy and turn it into other form of useable energy. Da Hye tried to extract chlorophyll using a rubbing alcohol. The result was amazing.

Plant 10

Compound Flower

We always think that sunflower is such a huge flower. The fact is sunflower flower is so tiny. The flower that we often see is a compound flower consisting of thousands of tiny flowers called florets which will produce seeds. The yellow petals are ray flowers. Ray flowers do not grow into seeds.

Plant 9

Not So Yucky Dissection

Do you know that we can dissect flower? Unlike frog dissection, flower dissection is not grouse at all. According to BBC school, flower consists of petals, sepals, nectaries, carpel, stamens and receptacle.

Plant 8

One way of classifying plants is according to wether they produce flowers. Most plants are flowering. Sometimes we do not see flowers on a plant but it doesn't mean that it doesn't produce flower. Flowers are produced when the time is right. Exploring the neighborhood, Da Hye found 6 flowering plants (frangipani, hay, primrose, bougenville, star fruit and periwinkle) and 3 non-flowering plants (bird nest fern, moss and fish bone fern).

Fungi 5

Fungi Hunter

Fungi/Mushrooms have been growing everywhere in our neighborhood. Da Hye went out exploring and took a snapshot of every different fungus she could find. Above picture is the result.

Fungi 4

Edible Fungi

Not all fungi are poisonous. Some of them are edible and rich in protein, minerals and vitamins. Da Hye found 8 species of edible mushrrom in supermarket and made a mushroom saute out of them.

Fungi 3

Mushroom Picking

This is the best thing about rainy season, mushrooms grow everywhere in our neighborhood. It's time to learn about mushroom anatomy. There are cap, gill, stem and mycelium.

Fungi 2

Bread Mold Experiment

Bread mold is a fungus. Fungi are not plant. They do not have chlorophyll. Hence, they cannot make their own food. Fungi feed on plants and animals - dead or alive. They also feed on things that are made from plants or animals (like the bread). Fungi break down their food into substances that they can absorb. When they do so, they cause their food to decay. The same thing happen with the mold growing on the above bread. Download the worksheet for the experiment.
