Plant 4

Stringy Dodder

Stringy dodder or "tali putri" in Indonesian, is a parasitic plant which sucks the nutrients out of other plants. Small bumps along the dodder's surface puncture the host's stem and begin sucking out nutrients from the phloem. Da Hye tried to see the tiny bumps under the microscope. They were really tiny.

Flat Wide Screen

It's supposed to be Da Hye's version of HD flat wide screen TV. The running program is 'reading time' for younger children.

History 3

Colonial Life

The present day United States of America was a non exsistance 400 years ago. It was the land of Indian or the native americans. The european settlers came across the Atlantic ocean in search for a new land and they started their colony in America. How was it like to live in a colonial time? Here's how. (Da Hye screamed: "Look at the Governor's house...wow...how humble! If a governor lived like that what about the others?")

History 2

Long Ago and Today

How did the children play long time ago? Da Hye got part of the answer by visiting a store specializing in selling Indonesian traditional toys. Her favorite long ago toy was "Jaranan" (woven horse). What about toys children play long time ago in other country? try the worksheet and visit the toy museum in United Kingdom.

History 1

History of Jeans

From the book "The Story of Jeans", Da Hye learnt that Jeans were invented by a German man named Levi Strauss, how it was made, the difference between jeans and denim, and that the first dye used to color jeans blue was indigo plant, then coal and finally bacteria. (pic: Cutting the old short jeans to prove that the blue and white thread were woven to make jeans(left), recycled jeans (right) too good to be thrown away)

Physics 5

Magnet Power

Magnetism is an invisible force. A force is anything that pushes, pulls or move an object. Magnetism has a force that only pulls on some metals, iron is one of them. Da Hye uses this information to find iron ore that we can easily find in the black sand.

Physics 4

Making Magnet

The first magnets were made of natural rock called iodestone. Some things, such as iron, can be magnitized more easily than others. Thus we can make magnet from it by lining up its atom using other strong magnet. Rub..rub..rub....

Physics 3

Ancient Device = Modern Technology

Slingshot or catapult may look humble but not simple. Although a 'petit' homeschooler is just having fun with it, a little lesson about aerospace engineering is learnt, well at least now Da Hye knows about the word 'gravity'. "Can I shoot the star?" she asked. Here's how to build a handmade slingshot. Too busy to make? Play with it virtually.

Bird 1

Be Kind to the Sparrows

Da Hye spotted that the sparrows in our neighborhood used to eat from the neighboring kids' "throw up" on the street. Feeling pity, she made bird feeder for the sparrows from the used ice cream and milk boxes. But the result was a bit dissapointing because the sparrows loved the kids' "throw up" better than the seeds prepared.

Music 2

Gambang

Indonesia has many different kinds of beat instruments, from the very simple one made by bamboo tubes or the very distinctive one made by bones. (pic: Da Hye conducting a research on Indonesian beat instruments (left), playing "gundul-gundul pacul" with gambang (right))

A new paint can give a room a quick fix. That's what Da Hye learns from a TV show "Clean House". Painting a house is not a hard thing to do.
